When it comes to building out a coaching staff, the old adage "experience matters" holds true.

In Orlando, Scott Frost and UCF seem to have fully embraced that philosophy.

The Knights made the addition of David Overstreet II official today. The former Dallas Cowboys assistant has joined Frost's staff as the new corners coach.

The hire becomes the second corners coach Frost has had to hire this off season.

Back in December, shortly after Jon Sumrall was hired as the new head coach at Florida, he plucked Brandon Harris from the staff to join the ranks of the SEC. Frost then hired Will Johnson to fill the role, and Johnson left for a coaching post with the Minnesota Vikings last month.

Overstreet, who most recently served the secondary / defensive backs coach coach for the Cowboys, brings a wealth of professional-level knowledge to the Knights' defense.

Prior to following Cowboys defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus to Dallas, Overstreet worked with the NFL coaching veteran in Chicago as the Bears nickels coach, where they ranked among the top 6 teams in the NFL in interceptions during a three-year span.

Overstreet also worked alongside Eberflus with the Colts, first as a defensive quality control coach before moving to assistant defensive backs.

The move adds another optimistic hire for UCF, which is currently enjoying a wave of momentum under Frost's direction heading into year two of his second stint leading the Orlando-based program. The Knights just missed a bowl game last fall with a 5-7 record.

"Any time you can bring in someone with David's level of NFL experience, it’s a win for your program," Frost shared in a statement announcing the hire. "He's spent a ton of time in the pros and helped develop some young, talented guys. He knows what it takes to succeed at the highest of levels, and I think our guys will learn a lot from him."

He joins a defensive staff led by defensive coordinator Alex Grinch, the former Oklahoma and USC defensive coordinator under Lincoln Riley, where Mike Dawson is one of the only other members of the defensive staff with NFL experience. Dawson spent a season with the 49ers under Chip Kelly in a defensive quality control role back in 2013.

Overstreet played his college football at Missouri, where he crossed paths with Alex Grinch in the early 2000s as Grinch was beginning his coaching journey with the Tigers as a graduate assistant.
